The age and origin of the E280A gene mutation responsible for early onset Alzheimer's in a Colombian family with an unusually high incidence of the disease has been traced to a single founder dating from the 16
th century. Scientist sequenced genomes of more then a 100 family members to identify regions of common ancestors and origins of the mutation. E280A gene mutation for this particular family, caused early onset of Alzheimer's. There is no medical break through, but scientist were able tract the mutation all the way back to the 16th century, which was interesting.

This article is very interesting information, I am interested to see just how far back the disease goes back. Maybe if they could trace it back to the origin or the diease it will be possible to create a cure for the disease.
ReplyDeleteNice topic. It's amazing how far back they can track the disease. Perhaps the identification of the gene that causes this can become a regular test for future members of the family. I'm glad they had testing done and that their alarmingly high incidences of alzheimer's will subside
ReplyDeleteAn interesting finding done on alzheimer's diseases. Tracing this disease back was the interesting part, and this could possibly lead to a cure for the future since the gene was pinpointed. There are many ways it can be used to test people and their family members on the risk of getting this disease, as well as preventing it for the future.
