Gene Expression Changes With Meditation

Researchers have linked meditation to have shown beneficial effects on inflammatory disorders in prior clinical studies and are endorsed by the American Heart Association as a preventative intervention. The new results provide a possible biological mechanism for therapeutic effects. The results show a down-regulation of genes that have been implicated in inflammation. The affected genes include the pro-inflammatory genes RIPK2 and COX2 as well as several histone deacetylase (HDAC) genes, which regulate the activity of other genes epigenetically by removing a type of chemical tag. People who were stressed that do meditation, were faster to recover from stressful events and from inflammation, then those who do not meditate. This discovery can open new techniques to target these genes through none medicated ways, but instead use meditation or other mindfulness-based training techniques to lessen chronic inflammatory conditions.

  1. This is an interesting concept, and I have always wondered the therapeutic wonders of meditation. Also, I have a theory that meditation calms the body; therefore, allowing arteries and veins to be better conditioned. Hopefully, this paves way for new studies on malpractice in various cultures.

  3. This is wonderful to hear! I have obtained loads of information via text and through first hand experiences with people who teach mediation. Meditation is seriously life changing in many different ways. I am glad to see that there is scientific attention being brought to to this area finally, and hopefully this will allow people to see the beneficial outcomes of this practice as more of a factual idea than just a word-of-mouth theory.

  4. This is such an interesting study. It makes a lot of sense that meditation would help cure these stress based inflammation since stress does account for a lot of illness people suffer from. It's also good that they can find a non-medicated form of treatment since medicine can produce such adverse effects in the human body.

  5. I already knew that meditation helped to reduce stress in general, but this article had more research where it could cure inflammation which is caused from stress. Stress plays a huge role in all aspects of people's live in this world. It is beneficial to have stress as well as harmful to have stress. A more natural and non-medicated treatment will only help to faster cure stress and/or stress-based illnesses, and not to mention it will be inexpensive.
