Discovery That Mature Cells Can Be Reprogrammed to Become Pluripotent

Scientist at Karolinska have found that cells can be reprogrammed to a embryonic like state. This means they can be made into stem cells. The subject used was a mouse. The cells from the mouse were covered with Oct3/4, Sox2, c-Myc, and Klf4 in a suspension of cells. These cells can then be programmed to become any tissue for the body. The mouse resulted in a tumor in the areas of added genes, this was expected since they added these cells to do just that. As for what pluripotent is, it is the potential for development. This means that the cell can be changed into more than one thing after turning it to an embryonic cell. This allows it to become anything.

  1. Amazing! What a very good study. If scientists can get this going in humans we may be able to reduce the demand for stem cells for regenerative purposes and they can just reprogram cell already available in the individual's body.
