An
article in the New York Times, written by Holcomb B. Noble, discusses the increased spread of the
respiratory syncytail virus in babies. This is a very common virus that almost all babies will experience throughout their life. It show symptoms of a common cold and is normally left untreated by a doctor and will go away on its own. However, this can be extremely harmful with babies who have lung or heart disorders, were born premature, or born as a twin. Twins have lungs that are not as developed as a single baby being born, which causes them to be more at risk of high negative effects. The high volume of outbreak is more than likely due to the increase of infants at day care centers. There is a new injection that can be given to high risk infants once a months, but it is very expensive, about $1000 per injection.
Ever since I was little I got shots to prevent certain illnesses. I think this shot is a good idea because this can be a life threatening situation for a baby. Babies are so small and not fully developed which is why it is more deadly to babies than adults. Adults have a stronger immune system and can rid of a virus or cold ina week or two. Toddlers can easily get this virus from school, day care, or even another sibling that attends school can bring hte virus into the house and get others sick. This virus can be deadly to older adults because of their weaker immune system and heart and lung problems. There was a study done by the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology to see if this virus season casues asthma. The reuslt was 50/50 the children who had this virus as a child ended up with asthma later on in life. On a population level 13% ended up with asthma. There is still further research being doing to have more evidence. I think this injection should be mandatory for all infants and the injection should be cheaper. No one is going to want to pay that much for an injeciton every month, thats ridiculous.
