DNA Sequencing of P. Ance Leading to Better Acne Treatment

Scientist at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute and UCLA are conducting studies that show the good and bad bacteria that cause acne as reported by LA Times. Propionibacterium acnes, P. Acnes, is the bacteria that cause acne, but the scientist have shown that not all P. acnes are bad for the skin. In fact some are actually probiotic and help the skin out. The bad bacteria thought cause an immune system alert that cause the little red bums known as acne.

In their research of 101 people 49 with acne 51 with out acne, they found that the P. acne was 90% of the bacteria in the pores or both people with and without acne. They found two strains of P.acne in 20% of the patients with acne and one strain that was in all of the patients with out acne. They then studied the genome of 66 of the P. acne trying to differ the good bacteria from the bad. They found that the two strains found in the 20% of patients had picked up these bad strains from other bacteria or viruses, which cause the acne reactions. The new foreign DNA in the P. acnes is most likely sticking into the human tissue causing the immune reaction. The good strains contained a substance that works as an immune system for the bacteria itself, which means it can fight of the bad bacteria and viruses that are trying to infected it, which prevent pimples.

So the new method of treating acne now comes down to probiotics instead of antibiotics which were used in the past. It is like eating yogurt to promote good bacteria in the intestines. Instead of killing all the P. acne in the face the scientist suggest instead to use the good health strains of bacteria on the face instead. This will promote healthy skin and help prevent breakouts from the bad P. acne strains. The only problem with this theory is that the scientist do not know where exactly these bad P. acnes' come from, whether it is genetical or environmental factors. Further research is on the way for acne suffers who do not want to go through painful and some what harmful antibiotic treatments anymore.

  2. I never would have thought that there would be a strain of acne that promotes health in the skin. Acne has always been associated with poor diet and hygiene, so this comes at a surprise. The bad strains of the P. acnes can be controlled if people take the proper measures. Your comparison of the probiotics found in yogurt is true, and we should always practice natural ways to promote health.

  3. The good strain Propionibacterium acnes surprises me as well. This could open the door to new treatments of acne and new techniques of treatment. I wonder if the probiotic would have the same effect on any of the bad stains though.

  4. In this day and age I think it's about time someone figured out how to really cure acne. I'm glad it looks like they have made some real progress with this probiotic acne treatment method. I hope it's effective.
