Mould fungi, formally thought of as simply a nasty, slimy bothersome plant, is now beginning to show new traits that show helpful within then environment. Science daily recently spoke of an article about Vienna University of technologies’ study of mould fungi. Within the article it stated that mould fungi, species name Trichoderma, can react to subtle changes in their environment. Fungus’ ability to detect changes within the environment gave way to the discovery of fungus’ ability to live on and protect different types of plants. Vienna University found that certain species of mould fungi can be used instead of other chemical plant protecting agent. Places in Europe and Africa already practice the idea of fungi pesticides on their crops such as coffee and wheat.
With new discoveries of the uses of mould fungi, scientists are able to produce more non-chemical pesticides and other weed killers. This, in turn, will make our plant a greener place with less chemicals. Another advantage to fungus use is cleaner water, since there would not be as much chemical run off into the local drinking wells.
