Genetic Risks of Obesity Affected by Sleep?

According to an article in Science Direct, it explained that getting less sleep at night may increase the expression of genetic risk for obesity. This study examined 1,811 sets of  twins with an average age of 37 years old with the participants' height, weight, and typical sleep duration were gathered by a survey. The people that participated had an average body mass index (BMI) of 25.4, which is categorized to be overweight by slightly, and their average sleep each night was seven hours and eleven minutes.

The findings, did reveal that people with a lower BMI had a longer stretches of sleep at night. Also, the researchers found that heritability of sleep duration is about thirty two percent. However, the most intersecting part of their findings was that the heritability of BMI when participants sleep for even hours straight was more than twice as large as the heritability of BMI when those people slept for nine hours straight.

This lead them to conclude that there is something about inadequate sleep duration that appears to facilitate the expression of genes that are involved in regulating body size. Taking this into count, this may be helpful in being able to identify specific genotypes for BMI in future research actions.

  1. Very interesting findings. However, I wonder if the amount of sleep an individual has per night is directly related to dietary habits opposed to genetic factors. If I drink an energy drink before bed, I won't sleep very much. Did the twins partake in the same lifestyle and diets? Were these factors included in the research? I am curious.

  2. It is true about the engery drinks however, that was not the subject of this article. The reachers were trying to figure this out based on a genetic level with obese people . This was not an article about lifestyle nor diet, but i am sure there are papers out there who do have that information for you. If you find anything about that, please share because i would like to know as well!!!!
