Diabetes Breakthrough

According to this article, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis may have hit a medical breakthrough by studying diabetes in mice.  They have brought the blood sugar in them down to a normal level using nicotinamide mononucleotide, NMN, a natural compound in the body.  It seems to prove much more effective in female mice than in male mice, but there is still some improvement.  There is a good chance that scientists could eventually use this on humans, because the mechanisms that NMN influences are very similar in humans and mice.  Diabetes can be caused by aging and when people eat too much foods that are high in fat.  This would lead to metabolic conditions that are not normal, like diabetes. The researchers are studying the effects of NMN when injected and, more recently, when dissolved in drinking water.  Hopefully, this means that someday soon, we could have a better treatment for diabetes.
