I just wanted to point out the movie, The Island with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson, is about "eugenics". It was made in 2005, but I watched it recently and realized that it is a futuristic idea of what we talk about today with growing organs and the like. It's a really interesting example and possible scenario of what could happen if mixing science and business takes innovation too far.
I'm not going to spoil the premise or the ending, but I think this movie fits in quite well with the discussions we've had in class about ethics and progress in the field of genetics. It's a good action movie, too.
I watched that movie and i agree it ties in very well with what we were talking about in class with ethics. I remember thinking about what the world would be like if there were an island with clones of people that actually existsed. On one hand it could help save lives but on the other do we really have the right to clone people simply because they ahve enough money to pay for it?
ReplyDeleteIt makes you think about how far the science and business world will actually go in the future. How much is too far?
I love that movie! I agree that it ties in with the ethics stuff we talked about in class. I read a book over the summer by Margaret Atwood that also got into the ethics of genetics. In the book they grew chicken nuggets with genetically engineered chickens that didnt have brains, they just grew little chicken nugget lumps. It was very odd. (the book was either Oryx and Crake or The Year of the Flood. Both books share a few characters and are both very good.) There was also talk of companies testing their drugs and diseases on the unsuspecting people who were buying their heath products. Pretty crazy stuff.
