A recent study from a team at Scripps Research have identified that biomolecular condensates are not just liquid blobs within cells, but are actually networks of complex thin filaments. These networks are basically compartments without membranes. The condensates were then found to be crucial in clearing toxic proteins and controlling cell growth. By figuring this out, scientists are hopeful to connect this discovery to the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS. This study was interesting to me because every article always says that they have some new breakthrough to a potential cure to cancer or ALS. However, new discoveries such as these condensates' structure and functions may actually provide a new and/or plausible solution to these previously thought 'non curable diseases'.
