Ozzy Osboune is the Toxic Avenger

The legendary 61-year-old singer of Black Sabbath has allowed his DNA to be sequenced. As it turns out, there's a reason he's not dead yet. According to an article in the Sunday Times, he has gene varients that researchers have never seen before- some that enable him to do toxic amounts of drugs. The particular genes identified are associated with an increased tolerance and risk for alcoholism and methamphetamine addiction. The genes actually influence how Ozzy's body absorbs the drugs. He was six times more likely to be an alcoholic. He is also more likely to have hallucinations from smoking pot. The funny thing is that while he can consume copious amounts of illicit drugs, his body can't metabolize caffeine correctly. The researcher states that Ozzy's ADH4 gene "had a change on the regulatory region". It does not explain if this was inherited or some kind of epigenetic change as a result of all the drugs and booze he did. It's a question of which came first. Did Ozzy toxically poison himself producing a genetic mutant or did his parents pass on that gene?

  1. This is the coolest article ever. I always wondered how Ozzy is still around. Talk about getting lucky with that gene.

  2. I agree with hamiltonk. When i first started watching their television show featuring him, i thought he had Parkinson's disease. But after hearing about all of the drugs and alcohol he has consumed in his lifetime, i thought he would be a dead man walking. Lucky it truly on his side with this one. What do you think they will do with the gene besides study it? Do you think that his kids have it too? I know both Kelly and Jack were big in the drugs scene too.

  3. This article explains alot, about how Ozzy is still around. Too bad that other "rockers"didnt have to same genes as he does. Then they too would still be around today.
