Is your consumption of beer going to lead you to gastric (stomach) cancer? Researchers in Europe are examining an increase of individuals developing stomach cancer. This is about 20 percent of the population of 521,000 adults 35-70 years old, who have a gene mutation in the metabolism of alcohol. The genetic variant is “rs1230025” that is linked to alcohol digestion. Whether being a heavy drinker or having the variant, you are at risk but having both with increase you risk. Since this study involves individuals from Asian and European countries, the concern is less relevant in the states. However, try to keep it that way because drinking does increase the risk of liver cancer and other health related issues.
There are always factors to contribute to developing cancer. In this study, there was a variant in the gene that contributed the development of stomach cancer. A study done by the Department of Medicine IV (Gastroenterology), University Hospital of Heidelberg at Mannheim, Germany presents a similar study that compares how the gastric mucosa deteriorates with the % volume of beer, wine, and whiskey in which the % volume causes sores in gastric lining of the digestive tract. It is due to the amount of pure ethanol/ alcohol which a beer contains 13 grams in 12 ounces o beer. They mentioned that wine and hard liquors do not increase the risk.
