Fitness Runs in Your Genes; Literally

Studies have shown that being fit and active runs in your genes. Your ability to lose weight and exercise has a lot to do with your families genes. Some people struggle to shed those extra pounds while others lose weight like its nothing. Scientists have proven that your ability to lose weight has something to do with your genes but they are not exactly sure which genes effect this. Through a study they have found that people with over 19 single-nucleotide polymorphisms in their DNA have improved their fitness three times faster than those with nine or fewer SNP's. Not only does your fitness run through your genes, but your motivation to exercise also has something to do with your genes. I completely agree with this article because people in my family have little motivation to exercise while other families go to the gym or are very athletic. Some people who are overweight struggle to lose weight while others have no issue. It's not fair having those genes that make you not motivated to get fit. Maybe one day scientists will find the exact genes that cause this and can help people lose more weight when they are going through a struggle because exercising literally runs through your genes.

  1. This research seems to prove something that must unfit people have probably felt: it is unfair that some people just don't seem to gain as much weight as others. While others may be "genetically blessed" in terms of fitness and weight, this should not be an excuse to just give up on being healthy. Especially in the U.S., where the percentage of the population that is obese is higher than other nations, people need to focus on being more active and eating healthier.
