A Liberal Gene

Based on an article on Discovery News, scientist think that they may have found a gene that could lead to people identifying themselves as liberal. Scientists say that the gene alone doesn't determine, that its also environment, but it may add to people being more liberal.  This article kind of takes us back to the nurture vs nature discussion. Does environment alone decide which side of the political spectrum we fall or does biology have something to do with it as well.

Personally I don' t really know if I believe that this proves that liberalism is inherited. I still believe that it is based on your own experiences, the people who you communicate with, and your own personalities. Maybe if there was more research to back it up I would be able to at least consider the possibility but until then it doesn't make sense that genetics would play a role in which political party you side with.

  1. I really doubt this means that liberalism is inherited. It seems much more to be the product of environment, plus I remember the professor mentioning a few studies like this where the data isn't clear enough.

  2. I agree, It sounds absurd that someone's political views could be inherited. It's interesting that you brought up the nurture vs nature debate as well. As soon as I read the article this also came to mind. I believe that becoming a liberal is a combination of the two. The way you are raised (nurtured) can most definitely be responsible for the morals or opinions you build. Although, your genes ( nature ) can also be responsible for the type of personality you have, which also can contribute to your views or beliefs politically.
