Antibiotic to combat resistant bacteria

A team led by Professor Kim Lewis was able to isolate a new polypeptide which they are calling Darobactin, which consists of seven amino acids. This new polypeptide is able to bind to a site on gram negative bacteria, disrupting them and killing them. It has shown great promise, having been effective against several types of bacteria that are both normal and antibiotic-resistant.

I think this is amazing. With how many reports of bacteria and viruses becoming more resistant to our current treatments, it is heartening that people are finding more ways to combat those super bugs. I hope that this brings more success in the future.

  1. This discovery could save modern medicine as we know it, as many resistant strains have been popping up in recent year. But I can't help but wonder if bacteria could simply evolve to be resistant to this too.
