Preparing for a Future of Gene-Edited Babied




Genetic engineering can create the 'ideal' human. Parents will be able to pick and choose the different characteristics they want for their children, and ultimately create a 'superhumans'. The procedure begins with going to an IVF clinic and getting the eggs extracted and fertilized. The egg is then screened for genes, mutation disorders, and chromosome disorders. The egg can then be modified so that the child has the desired traits. 

This is what the future holds and I think that there are some pros and cons to it. One of the pros is being able to remove genetic disorders and inherited diseases such as Alzheimers, Huntington's, or predisposition heart diseases. In the future and long term, the human race will be conceived in a laboratory and could possibly have no variation.

  1. Science is amazing , this article was very intertesting, i know that parents can pick the sex of there now by using IVF, however this goes beyond that. The part about Alzheimers disease because there is not cure for this disease.I hope one day scientist find cures for these disease's

  2. I agree with your pros and cons that this genetic engineering study consists of. Although I think its fascinating that it's possible to create the ideal or perfect human, I wouldn't want to live in a world where there was no human variation.

  3. Very well-written post! I do believe that there are pros and cons to it, and that the pros do indeed outweigh the cons. I do hope, however that this genetic engineering does not fall into the wrong hands. While it is indeed a scientific breakthrough that genetics engineering is possible to avoid diseases in genetics, it is also a question of ethics as to whether the parents should be allowed to choose the appearance and features of their own children. I do feel that genetic engineering is beneficial to mankind, however if I feel that it should not be used to alter the appearance of the child, as I have heard is possible with genetics engineering.

  4. This article makes me feel both astonished by how far science has gone, and it gives me goose-bumps caused by fear of how dangerous this can be. While there is undeniably pros and cons to it we can definitely point out the pros but the extend to which this can be damaging is unknown. Also the is an ethical component of whether this is right or not, who will benefit from this and who is to decide who can not use this technology? There are just so many questions about this, that need immediate attention before providing this technology to the public.

  6. As cool as this is and it being a big breakthrough, I feel that it is wrong for people to be able to pick and choose the characteristics of their children. It is great that they would be able to prevent certain diseases from occurring, but I believe that that is all this should be used for. Also, if they put limitations on how this can be used the whole "superhuman" situation could potentially be avoided.
