Designers Dogs and CRISPR Customization

Eukaryotic DNA has always been a pain to insert foreign DNA into. It is much easier to isolate enzymes from bacteria to cut plasmids and then insert those new plasmids back into bacteria. Eukaryotic DNA is dense and finding a specific binding site for an enzyme to cut it would be hard. It would be like trying to land a pinhead from a mile up in the air onto an X on the ground that is hidden by dense forest.

China has managed to alter the DNA of the beagle nonetheless. Utilizing CRISPER, a relatively new class of enzymes that show promise in editing eukaryotes' DNA, the gene for myostatin was destroyed in 2 beagles. There were the only 2 out of 27 puppies born with this modification, and in the beginning, there were 65 embryos.

Deletion of the myostatin gene caused these dogs to become high in muscle mass. But the point of this was to show that it could be done. In the future, the hope of using dogs to have human genes so that certain genetic diseases could be simulated in them is high.

For more about animals that have had similar modification done to them, China has succeeded in making miniature pigs by this same method.

  2. I think that we have made incredible strides in genetic manipulation. This article is extremely interesting and informative and so is the article about miniature pigs. CRIPSR is taking genetic engineering to the next level and this article states it perfectly, "With gene editing taking biology by storm, the field's pioneers say that the application to pets was no big surprise. Some also caution against it. “It's questionable whether we should impact the life, health and well-being of other animal species on this planet light-heartedly,” says geneticist Jens Boch at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg in Germany.

  3. It is crazy to think that just by altering a gene, a scientists can produce a dog with more muscle mass. I also did a post about the crispr method being used on chickens. The alter the chickens genes in order to create much larger chickens over the course of 50 years. This method over the years is going to make many scientific breakthroughs.
